Stephen Psaradellis is an 8th grader at Thomas Middle School in Arlington Heights. Stephan is an Honor Roll student, plays center on the Basketball team and is passionate about music. This year at Thomas Stephan is taking their Career Connection Class. Career Connection is an award winning class, started in 1997. The class is designed to prepare students for the workforce by having students complete surveys and discussions to determine their work values and interests. Once they have decided what careers they are interested in, the students will then be exposed to that career field thru an on-site, multi-day job shadow experience.
To determine where each student is placed for their job shadowing experience they are interviewed individually by a panel made up of teachers, volunteers and me. I am Nic Yoder the Learning for Life Executive for the Northwest Suburban Council. I was asked to sit on the panel to help place these students into their job shadow opportunities, by using the Councils’ network of volunteers.
During his interview Stephan told us about his love of music and his interest in pursuing it as a career. The panel was able to setup a few days of shadowing with professionals in the music and performing arts industry. He was able to shadow Bruce Nelson a professional musician and Learning for Life Volunteer. Bruce invited Stephen to shadow him while he rehearsed and preformed at the South Shore Cultural Center with the entire symphony orchestra. When Stephen arrived at the Cultural Center he was introduced to the conductor Renee Baker. Renee then asked Stephen if he would like to practice with the orchestra along with Bruce. Stephen said “yes” they set him up with some congas and he must have done a good job because the conductor asked Stephan to stay on and play during the performance that night. Stephen nervously agreed. He played that night and did a great job. Stephen said that the experience was “mind-boggling”. Stephen also said that he was well informed and had a lot of fun all at the same time.
I would just like to thank Bruce Nelson for participating and doing an amazing job.
